Honey the Way it Should Bee …..

Wholesome Sweeteners' Fair Trade CertifiedOrganic & Raw Honeys are produced traditionally by Mayan beekeers deep in the jungles of Mexico, where the honeybees feast on native wildflowers.

Honey has been used for thousands of years to sweeten foods, confections and beverages as well as to promote wellness (mainly due to its renowned antibacterial properties).  A 9000 year old cave painting found near Valencia, Spain, is one of the oldest depictions of humans harvesting honey.  The ancient Mayans keep a calendar for beekeeping and ritually honored the God of the Bees in festivals

The World's Best Honey

At Wholesome, we have searched the world for the best honeys. They must be Organic, Fair Trade Certified, artisanal andabove allthey must taste phenomenal. The honeys' color and flavors depend on the beesforage, the wildflowers blooming near the hives. As the annual honey harvest progresses, our honey flavors subtlety strengthen as the wildflowers change with the season.

We found one of the best honeys in the land of the Mayans, who have been perfecting their craft for thousands of years.

·      Our Organic Fair Trade Amber Honey is a rich Amber Honey with warm caramel notes. Perfect in beverages, baking, for glazing chicken and drizzled on fresh fruit or hot toast.

  • Our Organic Fair Trade Raw Honey is a thick creamy honey with a butterscotch essence; perfect spread on warm biscuits, in herby salad dressings or with yogurt and hard cheeses. This luscious organic honey is not heated above 110°F to maintain the nectar’s natural properties.

The Beekeepers: What is Fair Trade?

Wholesome pays a fair price directly to the beekeeper cooperatives for their Fair Trade Honey. The whole community prospers from the honey harvest; it creates meaningful employment, the beekeepers can develop the quality of their hives and send their children to school. By protecting the hives and native plant forage areas, Fair Trade encourages biodiversity and helps the forests thrive, too.

What is Organic Honey?

Our honeybees are not treated with antibiotics (used for disease control in non-organic production). The bees are wild and they naturally forage within a 2-mile radius from their hive. Wholesome’s Organic Honeys are free from chemical residues as the plants surrounding the hives have not been sprayed with pesticides or herbicides.

Baking with Honey

Experiment! Honey imparts a lush, mellow sweetness to recipes (as well as adding liquid to the mix), so play!

  • Substitute honey for up to ½ of the sugar normally called for in the recipe. Then add or reduce as you wish.
  • Reduce OTHER liquids in a recipe by 1/3.
  • For every cup of honey used in a baking recipe, add ½ teaspoon of baking soda to the dry mix.
  • Bake lower and slower: reduce the temperature by 25°F to help prevent over-browning and add a few minutes to the timer.

Storing Honey

  • Two-year shelf life.
  • Store honey at room temperature (refrigeration will speed honey’s crystallization).
  • Crystallization is a natural event in the course of honey’s life. If it occurs, simply place the honey jar in a bowl of warm (not hot) water. We recommend that you never put a honey jar in the microwave.

Honey & Health

  • Honey has a remarkable ability to help our bodies heal. It has both antibacterial and antioxidizing properties--and it soothes sore throats like nothing else.
  • And please remember: Never give honey to a child one year or younger because their little bodies are not able to process it effectively. It is a perfectly Wholesome Sweetener for older children and adults.

Note: Wholesome Sweeteners Fair Trade Organic Amber or Raw Honey may be used interchangeably in recipes. Please note that baking the Raw Honey will nullify its “raw” condition.
